Just as Ava was drifting off to sleep in my arms for a late afternoon nap yesterday, the doorbell rang.
I didn't answer it so as not to startle my sleeping angel, and since I wasn't expecting anyone, figured it was just UPS dropping off a package.
Then I heard the rustle of the side gate open.
Then I saw the shadow of a tall figure scaling the side of the house to the backyard.
It was my dad.
He was representing a client at the courthouse a couple miles from our house and didn't have his cell on him but wanted to drop in and say hi.
Since it seemed we weren't home, he figured he could at least check in on the roses he planted for Ava's birthday.
(Which are now growing to be luscious and fragrant, by the way.)
I'm so excited I didn't miss his visit.
He helped me weed and prune the roses (in his suit and tie no less!) and spray with soapy water to wash away the aphids.
And he brought strawberries and one of the best bottles of red I've ever tasted...
It was so nice to spend some quality father-daughter time together. It's been so long since we've had a chance to chat just the two of us. It was such a perfect Tuesday afternoon, and surprise visits like these really make me feel so thankful I have this time to work from home.
Thank you, Poppa, for teaching me to stop and smell the roses (and nurture them as well)!
